Star State Community
We are committed to building a transformative residential community where safety, independence, and belonging intersect—one that empowers individuals, reassures families and enriches the broader community.
Why We Exist
Star State Community believes that individuals with IDD deserve more than just a place to live—they deserve a home where they can experience independence, dignity, and inclusion while receiving the support they need.
We exist because every individual, no matter their ability, deserves to live a life filled with purpose, connection, and possibility.
Our Mission
Star State Community’s mission is to create holistic, inclusive environments where adults with special needs can thrive—through onsite programming, skill-building, community connection, and long-term housing solutions. Our mission is rooted in lived experience and a deep belief that every person deserves the chance to thrive with dignity, independence, and community. By supporting Star State Community, you’re not just giving to a cause—you’re investing in real lives, real futures, and a world where every star, no matter their ability, has the chance to shine.
Our Vision
Star State Community envisions a world where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are fully empowered to thrive in an inclusive, supportive, and vibrant community. We strive to create a nurturing environment where every individual is valued, equipped with essential life skills, and provided with opportunities for personal growth, independence, and meaningful connections.
Meet Our Founders
Dr. LaShawna Hill
My name is LaShawna Hill, and I am the proud founder of Star State Community. This organization isn’t just a vision—it’s a reflection of my life, my heart, and my journey as a mother.
I was a teenager when I became pregnant with my son, Deshawn. Like many young moms, I faced uncertainty, fear, and the pressure of growing up quickly. But nothing prepared me for the moment I learned that Deshawn had been diagnosed with an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). At that time, I was still a child myself—trying to navigate a world that didn’t always offer clear answers or support for parents like me.
It was scary. Overwhelming. Lonely at times. But it was also the spark that ignited my purpose.
Raising Deshawn has taught me about strength, perseverance, and the power of advocacy. I had to fight to make sure he had the resources, education, and support he needed—not just to survive, but to thrive. And in doing so, I realized that there were so many other families like mine—underserved, unseen, and in need of community.
